Do you feel like your life is mostly “tiis”?
Mostly sacrifice isn’t it?
You know this will pass - this problem, difficulty - but even if you do have the power to make it pass quickly - sometimes - you just can’t do it right?
Let me tell you my story about a “sacrifice” that I did in 1991.
I was the only one working to help my family to live day to day.
In our family there are 8 girls and 5 boys.
My eldest sister was already in Canada with a life of her own - completely cut off from us at this point. She was legally adopted when I was in Grade 5 - so that instantly made me into the eldest in the family. Her story is for another time. But yet, I lost a sister during elementary.
Back to 1991. I was working for one year already feeding 13 people in the province. My salary was P 5000 only. I gave most of that to help them live. Many people were supporting my family of origin, titos, titas, lolos and lolas in both sides - even strangers, really so we “got by”. Maraming tiis.
But then my 10 year old brother Ernie got really sick, started convulsing at 330am on a Monday. I woke up, took a bath and saw my parents over his feverish body. At this point I had around 5 years of Charistmatic Catholic experience behind me - but do you know what Idid? I saw my parents - praying over my bother - it seems. But did you know what I did?
I looked at them and went out the house - so I wouldn’t be late for the 4am bus.
I did nothing. I remember not kissing him, not holding him, not praying over him.
I told myself, “I have to work so they can live.”
I was unaffected by what was happening to Ernie because my focus was earning.
My focus was that the 12 remaining members of my family of origin would be able to live, to go to school to eat.
A few months passed. Ernie’s sickness got worse. They needed someone to be with him in the hospital in Makati Medical. Friends pooled their money to get him here - because I knew we certainly didn’t have the money to pay for it. I walked to the hospital (it was nearby) and stayed for one night. But I had to leave again, because you know, I had to work during the day.
I was with Ernie when they did the CT scan in St. Luke’s.
I was in the hospital.
I was holding him for x-rays and in the ambulance in between hospitals.
But my mind and body always went to back to work.
I had to.
There were many mouths to feed.
Finally, he was admitted to RITM, a large Alabang Government Hospital hidden behind the trees near Festival Mall (during this time, the mall area or the Madigral park doesn’t exist yet, it’s just a forest).
RITM was for infectious diseases. I went there for two days.
My lola told me to remove my necktie because I looked like I had money (company uniform).
I didn’t understand nor did I care to understand what was happening to Ernie. The medical talk was beyond me – because all I cared about was the money I needed to spend to help my family live.
That night - in the Intensive Care Unit, I asked Ernie to tell me a story of a movie he just watched. I wanted to show him that ALL MOVIES ended well, and I wanted this to be a lead-in to tell his 10 year old mind about Jesus.
Noble you think? I never got there.
Ernie told me about the movie Black Beard’s Ghost. Black beard was a bad pirate who died but stayed in limbo (didn’t get to heaven) because he had unfinished business to do. Eventually the movie ended with him doing the good deeds as a GHOST and he happily dies completely.
The story started with a ghost and ended with a death. What a bad story to talk about good endings, right? So I kept my mouth shut.
|Black beard was a bad pirate who died but stayed in limbo.|
Soon, I was ready to go home - to sleep because a relative came to take over bedside duties for Ernie. So I left. The next day was Saturday -so I didn’t have work. But passing by Alabang to Laguna, I wrestled with the decision to go home to Laguna or drop by the hospital.
I opted for Laguna instead.
When I came home, everybody was crying. Ernie died just this morning probably while my bus was passing by the hospital.
We were 5 boys and 8 girls. Now only 4 boys.
What did I miss?
My mind was fixated on “giving the needs of the many” but I forgot the lesson of the Lost Lamb, that the shepherd would risk the 99 sheep just to rescue one lamb. I told you I knew this already, I had 5 years of “worship God” or “God First” experience in College as part of a Catholic Community. You should think I could have applied this in my own family. But I didn’t.
Death is a big regret maker but so is life. The life I lead is always thinking about “I need to make money for…” at the cost of the life/attention/love I can give NOW to my family.
This story has not ended by the way, but maybe you’ll join me in my live events to show you the complete story.
Just take the personal lesson my life has for you and stop sacrificing the ONE for the “many”. Stop the “tiis” and do the right thing NOW.
Now let me teach you some new things:
Once upon a time, companies didn’t exist.
Yes, there was such a time.
Cities did not exist too.
What we have are small “smiths” - black smiths, sheep smiths, clothes smiths”.
They were experts in their fields.
They didn’t have a CEO or COO or Marketing Department.
They relied completely on word of mouth.
Because I’m talking about before the invention of the printing press.
So what is word of mouth?
People talking to people.
This is the most basic of all marketing - people talking to people.
I’m not saying “Sales people talking to people, selling them things” -I’m talking ordinary customers or admirers talking about these smiths or experts. And people all over Japan would come and visit this expert sword maker in Japan and ask him to make his swords.
Now this sword maker probably had apprentices - unpaid servants - wanting to learn from him. He had no employees.
So how was he able to feed his family and apprentices?
By word of mouth marketing.
Now we have corporations and marketing departments - and even until now- if you have no paying clients - you have no company.
Without marketing - no company can survive.
Without any way to create / convert people from strangers to buyers - you have no company.
So getting a marketing mindset is essential, critical to becoming a flourishing entrepreneur - whether she’s a solo virtual assistant or a large VA team with an online marketer as leader (like me).
Do you know which of the 3 marketing mindsets I used?
These are the 3 Missing Mindsets You Need To Have:
These are three mindsets you need to immerse yourself in.
These are three mindsets enough to change your life.
So, which one did use?
Jomar, do we really need to know the difference? Hindi ba magbe-blend in na lang sa brain namin yan?
Actually, YES. You need to be aware of them. You’re done with “Tiis” right?

"HOW TO MAKE THE RIGHT DECISIONS NOW."

Many are just filing it away for "future use" and "one day pag may time".
I've seen many formula for miserable lives and this is one of those:

You do not have to keep suffering today.
And you mustn't prepare yourself to suffer too.
